Short Bio (English)
J. Kimo Arbas is a post-conceptual media artist, patented inventor, and Baltic vaidila working across sound, voice, still and moving image, light, and technological systems to shape immersive perceptual environments and discrete artistic forms. Bridging ritual knowledge with contemporary media and anticipatory systems thinking, his practice examines how human–technology structures condition awareness, attention, and responsibility.
Arbas holds multiple patents for biofeedback-based systems that identify human mental states, research that informs his artistic exploration of perception and consciousness across installation and durational audiovisual contexts. His solo exhibition cycle Awakening was recently presented at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, Kaunas, occupying the museum’s largest exhibition hall and marking his first national-museum solo project; the work extends into a limited corpus across exhibition and collection contexts.
Educated at California Institute of the Arts, UdK Berlin, and MIT Sloan, he is a member of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt Responsible Leaders Network, VG Bild-Kunst, BBK, and IGBK, and is recognized as an Art Creator by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. His practice operates between contemplative encounter and institutional critique across museum, research, and private collection environments in Europe and the United States.

J. Kimo Arbas ist postkonzeptueller Medienkünstler, patentierter Erfinder und baltischer Vaidila. Seine Arbeit umfasst Klang, Stimme, Still- und Bewegtbild, Licht und technologische Systeme und formt immersive Wahrnehmungsräume wie auch eigenständige künstlerische Formen. Zwischen rituellem Wissen, zeitgenössischer Medialität und antizipativem Systemdenken untersucht seine Praxis, wie Mensch-Technik-Strukturen Bewusstsein, Aufmerksamkeit und Verantwortung prägen.
Arbas hält mehrere Patente zu biofeedbackbasierten Systemen zur Identifikation menschlicher mentaler Zustände; diese Forschung prägt seine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Wahrnehmung und Bewusstsein in installativen und durationalen audiovisuellen Kontexten. Sein Ausstellungszyklus Awakening wurde jüngst im M. K. Čiurlionis Nationalmuseum für Kunst, Kaunas, in der größten Ausstellungshalle des Hauses präsentiert und markiert seine erste Einzelausstellung in einem Nationalmuseum; die Arbeit setzt sich in einem begrenzten Werkkomplex über Ausstellungs- und Sammlungskontexte fort.
Ausgebildet am California Institute of the Arts, an der UdK Berlin und am MIT Sloan, ist er Mitglied des BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt Responsible Leaders Network sowie von VG Bild-Kunst, BBK und IGBK und als Kunstschaffender gemäß Artikel 7 durch das Kulturministerium der Republik Litauen anerkannt. Seine Praxis bewegt sich zwischen kontemplativer Erfahrung und Institutionskritik in Museen, Forschungskontexten und privaten Sammlungen in Europa und den USA.
